Week 1

Run-Improve-Grow™ (RIG)

Lean Kaizen Overview

Introduction to the principles of Run Improve Grow and how it influences the definition of value.


Overview of the definition of lean, the 5 principles of lean, the 9 wastes, and strategies for waste elimination that include the use of daily Kaizen.

Week 2

RIG Value Stream Mapping

How to use Run Improve Grow Value Stream Mapping to envision a future state, define value, document information and material flow, and design a transformation plan.

Week 3

5S / 6S



Visual Management


Definition of 6S: Safety, Sort, Sweep/Shine, Straighten, Standardize, and Sustain. Keys to implementing and sustaining 6S.


Introduction to a visual management system that prepares the workplace for other improvements. Students will learn how visual management creates standards and triggers behaviors with visual tools.

Problem Solving

A3 Problem Solving is a methodology used for decades at Toyota. This course will cover the Definity A3 approach and includes a case study and a reusable electronic A3 template.

Week 4

Pull Systems




Pull production paces material flow and supplier deliveries based on actual production and not forecasts and schedules.


Kanban is a visual management method for pull, used both internally to pace production and externally to visually manage supplier deliveries.

Week 5

SMED (Setup Reduction)


TPM (Total Productive Maintenance)

SMED (Single Minute Exchange of Die) is a methodology that separates internal and external setup steps and reduces overall changeover times.


Total Productive Maintenance involves everyone in the ownership of our critical assets and equipment, maximizing up-time and throughput.

Week 6

FAST Problem Solving


Standardization & Sustainment

FAST problem solving is a simple, innovative method developed by Definity Partners for robust problem solving by frontline employees!


Sustaining is always the toughest part of any improvement effort. Standardization methods lock in improvements and eliminate variation to ensure processes are accomplished consistently and that future improvements are possible.


Certification Requirements:

Students will utilize an online Run-Improve-Grow™ Time Allocation application to track their time after the first session, the results of which will be integrated into an all-new RIG Value Stream Mapping course in week two. Students’ RIG VSM storyboard will be started in week two and will be a living document that they continue working on throughout the course to develop a lean project they can be working on during and after the course. The lean tools certificate will be dependent on submission and approval of an approved RIG VSM storyboard.
